The Carolina Riptides defeated the Phoenix Firebirds, 8-4, in Union League action at IBM Field. Carolina pitcher Grant Holmes had a standout performance. In 6 innings, Holmes surrendered 3 hits, while striking out 7 and walking 3. He allowed 3 runs. The win gives Carolina a season record of 20-19.

Brenton Doyle had a big 2-run home run for the Riptides in the bottom of the second inning. With Carolina trailing 2-1 and a runner on 1st, he sized up a slider from 33-year old left-handed pitcher Kyle Freeland and punished it. The result was his 3rd home run of the season, which put the Riptides on top, 3-2.

"Winning the game is always the first objective," Doyle said.
